Madame Trixie

Finding Lost Souls in Every Turn

Beatrix Wright was born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, where she learned fine manners and important things such as embroidery and pianoforte and how to serve tea.  She grew up to be a debutante of first water courted by many a fine gentlemen. However, Beatrix was bored to tears! She wanted some adventure in her life. As if an answer to her prayers, Mr. Worthington Cadwell III from Greensborough, North Carolina showed up. When Worthington started bragging about places he had been, as far away as Michigan and Louisiana, she was hooked. They posted the banns and were married the next year.

A few years later they heard from an old friend John Sutter that there was gold to be found in California. Since Tracy was in the family way, she was left with her parents while Worthington set out ahead to stake a claim in the gold rush. She waited until she could stand it no more and finally started after him on the Oregon Trail. Trixie soon found out adventuring was not what she thought it to be. Clean clothes and tea were a forgotten luxury. Her needle and thread bent towards canvas repairs instead of embroidery. Halfway there, she lost her child due to cholera. But there was no turning back for her.

Once she arrived in California she was at a loss as to how anyone could find anyone else. She decided to join a traveling troupe of musicians, players, and dancers to look for him. She changed her name to Trixie and played a beat up piano for her daily bread. She and the rest of the troupe kept the miners’ spirits up as she searched for her husband amongst the mining camps. Trixie found she quite enjoyed the stage and traveling all over and seeing new places every month. She eventually inherited the wagons from Madame Babs and started picking up strays. Le Petit Poisson was just the first unfortunate of many saved by dear Madame Trixie.
